JING: Training the Next Generation event
Developed by junior investigators for junior investigators, JING: Training the Next Generation (TNG) brings together clinical and non-clinical researchers in the ECMC network with experienced senior researchers. The course is a mix of lectures and interactive sessions, including advice on attendees' own study ideas from senior investigators across the ECMC network and from a range of expertise.
JING: TNG is an annual two-day event which has been held 11 times previously with over 500 trainees attending these events. This course is aimed at junior clinicians in cancer specialities and postdoctoral scientists (non-clinicians) at ECMCs who wish to pursue a career in cancer translational research and would benefit from learning how to develop study ideas.
What we offer attendees
- Opportunity to network with senior investigators (clinicians, scientists and statisticians) and patient representatives
- Make connections with your peers from across the ECMC network
This event is free to attend for junior investigators nominated by their ECMC Lead
Trainees are nominated by their ECMC Lead to attend the event. Download the agenda from the 2023 and 2024 events to get a better idea of the content of the meeting.
This year's meeting took place on 29 & 30 January 2024 in Manchester. Read more about it here

Below are some quotes from trainees who attended the TNG event in January 2024
- JING 2024 allowed me to interact with world-class senior investigators and discuss my study idea in a supportive environment
- I learnt so much and enjoyed myself immensely. At my level it was amazing to meet so many people at the forefront of their field and get to talk at length with so many people doing different research
- Really lovely and inspiring two-day event, with a healthy mix of researchers from different backgrounds working towards similar goals. The atmosphere was incredibly exciting and supportive and was a delight to be able to attend.
- I felt like it was much easier to make connections at this event than many others - mostly because the majority of attendees were at early career stage and didn't have lots of pre-built networks.
- PPI session was excellent. Really valued the time spent exploring the best way to utilise and involve patients and public research.
